You must register to vote, but it's quite painless (we only require a username and a password) and can be done in that box on the right. Registering lets reddit recommend you personally relevant links, because every vote trains a filter. If you'd like to be able to retrieve your password, make sure to enter an email address in your preferences section.

voting
On reddit your vote means, "I found this interesting," not "This should go on the front page."
Once registered, you can vote all links on reddit up or down based on whether you liked or disliked them. Your votes train a filter, so vote up links you liked and vote down links you disliked.
