reddit is a source for what's new and popular on the web -- personalized for you. Your votes train a filter, so let reddit know what you liked and disliked, because you'll begin to be recommended links filtered to your tastes. All of the content on reddit is submitted and voted on by users like you.

You must register to vote, but it's quite painless (we only require a username and a password) and can be done in that box on the right. Registering lets reddit recommend you personally relevant links, because every vote trains a filter. If you'd like to be able to retrieve your password, make sure to enter an email address in your preferences section.

On reddit your vote means, "I found this interesting," not "This should go on the front page."
